If I'd realized the Olympic torch was going to be here yesterday, I woulda chucked a sickie and been there with the thousands of others protesting what's going on in Tibet. But I pretty much shunned email and news on the weekend, plus I don't watch French TV anyway, so I was woefully unaware until it was over and the Eiffel Tower had been scaled.
Still, I hear things went just fine without my presence--fancy that! I read today that China's saying the "general public are outraged" by this. Hmm, really? If so, their outrage is misplaced. People being slaughtered vs. a torch--hmmmm. The fact that people are actually protesting the Olympic flame, the fact that even I would have been motivated to get off my lazy ass and go join the protestors, should say something about the actual feeling amongst the general public. Yes, yes, I know--sports should be separate from politics and it's not fun for the athletes or for the cops (see Rollerblades below--I love that) but governments aren't taking on China, so it looks like it's up to the people and screw sports. Besides, how can anyone even care about games when people are being murdered and the very liberties that allow many of us to travel and enjoy those games are being denied others? I don't get it. (Oh, wait, yes I do--money, money, money, money, money.)
So, of course I cheered when I read those clever people in San Francisco had got the jump on the torch's arrival and were already protesting, God bless their little cotton sox.
Haven't you got enough, China? Free Tibet.
This was the blog of an Eloise wannabe and her 2 roustabout kitties as they work on a book deal in the City of Lights, giggling all the way. Now it's the blog of an Eloise wannabe planning her next escape (California, Canadia?) with 2 other kitties--still working, still giggling.
