The thing I dislike the most about where I live is that the building residents can be so very, very precious where noise is concerned, even during "normal" hours when people, you know, live. Not good for a person like me, who was raised in a household in which music was played just about all the time--and rather loudly if my mother had her way, especially when we moved to the mango plantation and had 40 acres all to ourselves. I remember one night being outside and hearing The Way We Were just taking over the sky (as it should).
But I know it started before that. I remember my mother playing Louis Armstrong and Frankie loudly from our apartment in Port Moresby, and being outside our flat in North Rockhampton and hearing the opening strains of Neil Diamond's Crunchy Granola Suite wafting through the open window, while we kids grooved on the lawn. And then there was the night a dinner guest fell asleep after far too much revelry (back in the 70s, when food was heavy and booze even heavier), only to fall out of his chair when the cannons fired in Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. I still get giggle mileage from that.
So when I got home this afternoon and wanted to blast Springsteen's Sherry Darlin', I had to content myself with a quieter version. That got me thinking about songs that deserve to be played loud, nay, BLASTED. Here's my list (and it's not a small one:
