Sydney Pollack's career spanned over 50 years, as did his only marriage. What an incredible legacy of stories he's left us. Friends with Redford since they made their big-screen debut together in War Hunt, he went on to direct Redford 7 times. He's the man who, although he's quoted as saying Redford was a character actor stuck in a leading man's body, convinced Redford to take on the role of Hubbell Gardiner when Redford thought the role wasn't meaty enough, and, well, thank you. (I do believe from her smile that Barbara thanks you, too.)
Of all his works, though, Three Days Of The Condor is just...I've said it before here: I can finish watching it then immediately start it back up again, it grabs me completely. It's clever, suspenseful, sinister, funny, sexy and involving--the kind of film I'd like to make if I knew anything about making films. Which I don't and which I relied on Mr. Pollack to do for me.
He had the kind of voice I like listening to, as well ~ avuncular. Even when he was playing his more sinister roles, such as Clooney's boss in Michael Clayton and Ben Affleck's father-in-law in Changing Lanes, it was a pleasure to see him on-screen.
Last word goes to Clooney:
"Sydney made the world a little better, movies a little better and even dinner a little better. A tip of the hat to a class act. He'll be missed terribly."
This was the blog of an Eloise wannabe and her 2 roustabout kitties as they work on a book deal in the City of Lights, giggling all the way. Now it's the blog of an Eloise wannabe planning her next escape (California, Canadia?) with 2 other kitties--still working, still giggling.
